The President of the National Farmers Union of the USA, Roger Johnson has told Morning Starr host, Kafui Dey, Tuesday, that Genetically Modified Foods are healthy and economical, contrary to perceptions in Ghana.

“There are a lot of countries that are doing it, the science seems to suggest that they are perfectly fine. In the US it’s over 90% of farmers going the GMO way”.

According to him, fears that GM foods are unhealthy are untrue and must be disregarded.

“The science suggest that there is no difference between GMOs and the others, and in fact, in the US, the food and drug administration agency does not differentiate because there is no difference and you can’t differentiate.”

He, however, says local farmers must be educated to enable them understand the dynamics involved in cultivating GMOs.

Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) and the controversy around it has become popular in Ghana since 2013 after government announced the introduction of GMO technology into the country.

Activist groups including Food Sovereignty Ghana, The Coalition for Farmers Rights and Advocacy against GMOs, Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference, Convention People’s Party and individuals have all spoken against its introduction.
