GT donates to Ho Leprosarium

Ho, July 26, GNA - The Ghana Telecom (GT), on Tuesday donated items worth 24 million cedis to the inmates of the Ho Leprosarium and Dr. Asase Memorial Orphanage Home also in Ho.

Items donated to the Leprosarium include three bags of rice, gallons of cooking oil, bread, used clothing, shoes and leather bags. The orphanage had three bags of rice, gallons of cooking oil, bread, sandals, used clothing and toys.

Presenting the items, Mr. Douglas Kirk Wagba, Volta Regional Managing Director of the company said the donation, which is nationwide, was as a result of the company's step ahead to providing its social obligations.

He said it was also a sign that the company had move away from providing just the communication needs of the society to helping solve all other social problems, inhibiting the holistic socio-economic development of the society.

" The company is ready to associate with problems in the society and help solve them", he said.

Mr. Wagba promised to donate 50 pairs of special sandals to lepers and encourage them not to give up in life. Mr. Theophilus Osei Awua, Regional Leprosy Control Officer who received the items on behalf of the lepers expressed disappointment at how society fear leprosy and discriminated against people suffering from the disease.

He said the disease is mildly infectious and that once one is cured, there is no cause to fear anything adding that the situation was affecting the integration of people cured of the disease back into the society. Mr. Awua urged people with all skin diseases to seek quick medical treatment to forestall deformation that may occur in the affected part of the body that may be due to the disease.

He was grateful to GT for the gesture and called on other corporate organizations and Non-Governmental Organaisations to emulate them. At the orphanage, Mrs. Irene Asase Dgadzi, Founder and Director of the Home was happy about how society was awakening to help the needy. She underscored the importance and benefit of such gestures and called people to develop the interest in sharing success with the needy and thanked the GT for the assistance.
