Ghanaian women fear pregnancies more than STDs - Experts

Mr. Kyeremeh Atuahene, the Director of Monitoring and Evaluation at the Ghana AIDS Commission, said Ghanaian women are more afraid of being pregnant, than they are of contracting HIV.

According to the Ghana AIDS Commission's Director of Monitoring and Evaluation, Ghana's HIV infection rate is still pretty high despite the fact that there have been many awareness campaigns on how one contracts HIV.

Speaking to Starr FM's Francis Abban, Mr. Kyeremeh further expressed that the best way for to prevent infection is to use condoms when.

“Women now fear pregnancy than HIV... Anecdotally, you can realise that Ghanaians are becoming more and more exposed to this virus. Those who are co-habiting are those who contribute to most of the infections." he said.

Mr. Kyeremeh stated that those "prone" to infection are those who have risky behaviors. He went on to encourage Ghanaians to get tested so they know their HIV status, saying that the best way to reduce the risk of someone who has HIV transmitting it is for infected people to take anti-retro-viral drugs.

"We want to test as many people as possible so that we know the number of people who have the virus in the country. It’s important to know your HIV status as early as possible so that it does progress into AIDS. We doing targeted testing so we are looking for people under surge conditions”.
