The Disease Control Officer of the Asokwa Sub-Metropolitan Area, Mr John Baffoe Yeboah, has called for the maintenance of good sanitation practices to prevent cholera outbreaks as the rains set in.

He said the situation where people littered the streets and dumped garbage indiscriminately needed to stop adding that there is also the need to observe personal hygiene through frequent hand washing with soap and the eating of clean foods.

He said vegetables and fruits must be thoroughly washed before consumption and that cold foods that had been left uncovered must be heated before eating.

“It should not be business as usual, we need to be more alert and accept to take preventive measures,” he said.

Mr Yeboah who made the call through the Ghana News Agency (GNA) said they had already put in place an epidemic preparation plan to deal with any emergency.

He said cholera is a communicable disease, caused by bacteria, that stays in the faeces of an infected person and also affects the gastro intestinal tract (GIT).

Mr Yeboah said there should be strict enforcement of the assembly’s environmental sanitation bye laws.
