Herbal medicines must be tested before use

The government is committed to supporting people who want to promote traditional medicine - but herbalists must have their medicines tested by the appropriate authority before marketing them to the public.

The past Deputy Minister of Health, Mr Rojo Mettle Nunoo, said this yesterday at an alternative wellness conference held in Accra by the Expert Herbal Clinic in collaboration with the Ministry of Health.

The Chief Executive Officer of the clinic, Madam Monica Sedalor, said the time had come for the country to embrace alternative medicine and integrate it into the mainstream health system to complement government's efforts in providing quality and affordable healthcare to the public.

"Health experts and workers all over the world are now realising that we are not only what we eat and drink but also how we eat and drink, but also how we rest, exercise and maintain personal and environmental cleanliness," she said.

Madam Sedalor noted that the World Health Organisation (WHO) had advocated health promotion as the key to overcoming disease.
