KATH Accident and Emergency Centre receives equipment

The Medical Education Partnership Initiative (MEPI), a US based organisation, has donated medical equipment to the Accident and Emergency (A&E) Centre of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).

The gifts were meant to facilitate healthcare delivery, and educate health workers in 11 African countries, being assisted by MEPI.

The goal of the organisation is to scale up the production of required human resources to strengthen the health systems in beneficiary nations to effectively tackle the HIV and AIDS menace.

Professor Peter Donkor, Principal Investigator of the MEPI, who presented the gifts said his outfit aims to support the local training of emergency doctors and nurses, exchange visits of trainees to the US and South Africa, trainee research and medico-legal training for health professionals across the nation, as well as HIV research and research administration.

Altogether, about 11 emergency specialists have been produced with 19 residents currently enrolled onto the programme.

Through the Initiative, the first residency training programme for emergency physicians and nurses in Ghana and the West African sub-region, has been developed and running at the KATH A&E Centre.

Prof Donkor noted that as frontline health workers, the emergency staff are better positioned to improve the survival of critically ill patients and check the spread of deadly infections.

Dr George Owusu, Head of Emergency Medicine Directorate, expressed gratitude for the donation, saying it would improve records and data management at the Centre.
