The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) as the second largest healthcare facility in Ghana requires millions of cedis to ensure comprehensive retooling of the facility after audit conducted into operational challenges of staff.
"About Seventy Million Ghana Cedis (GHc70m) would be required to ensure comprehensive retooling of Hospital. ....The need of the expansion of the existing clinical facilities and also new ones to offer new specialist will also entail a further investment of Fifty Million Ghana Cedis (Ghc50m)", according to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the facility, Dr. Oheneba Owusu-Danso.
At the launch of KATH's Endowment Fund held a fortnight ago at Golden Bean Hotel in Kumasi attended by this reporter, Kwabena Danso-Dapaah, the CEO also highlighted some challenges currently needed to be addressed to save lives of the people coming from all walks of life to seek medical treatment.
"The needed facilities include centres for Cardiothoraxic Surgery, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Transplant Surgery, Fertility Services and Central Laboratories and General Stores for large volume of medical consumables and medicines in addition to the expansion of Psychiatric and Diabetes Care Centres", he revealed.
According to Dr. Oheneba Owusu-Danso, given enormity of the challenges, KATH's Board however has decided on two main strategies as away of addressing equipment and infrastructure deficit at the hospital,.
"The first one was to ensure a more prudent generation and use of the hospital's Internal Generated Funds (IGF) and secondly to establish Endowment Fund to help mobilise the needed resources to address some of the operational challenges", he stated.
"Whilst it is evident that the Hospital's Board and Management are doing their best to address some of these challenges, it is obvious that IGF of the alone cannot resolve all the operational bottlenecks facing the hospital", the CEO pointed out
