Former Director General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Dr Elias Sory, has stated that obesity is becoming a big problem in Ghana just like any non-communicable disease and needs to be fought with all available machinery.
Dr Sori gave the alert last Tuesday at the unveiling of Calorad, a weight-loss medication.
“A survey conducted in one of the big cities in Ghana some time ago, revealed that 20-24per cent of people had hypertension, 25.1per cent were overweight and 24per cent were obese. Shockingly, the survey still holds today,” Dr Sori alerted.
The former Director General of the GHS also noted that certain behaviours were promoting people worldwide to be ‘fat’.
“Many of us ride in cars, go to work, sit down the whole day and when you close, you go back in a car. Exercise becomes less. It is just not enough to enjoy yourself with the junk foods. Obesity brings problems.
World Health Organisation (WHO) recorded that about 2.8 million people died each year because they were obese.
