Mr Atuahene Agyemang, the Eastern Regional Health Promotion Officer, has called on parents and children to make regular hand washing a habit.

He said regularly washing of the hands especially after social activities and after visiting the toilets would save Ghana from many diseases including cholera.

Mr Atuahene said this when he addressed a gathering of pupils and parents as part of the region’s activities to observe the global hand washing day at Fotobi in the Nsawam Adoagyiri Municipality.

Fotobi is a community near Nsawam; it is one of the communities that recorded high cases of cholera last year.

Health officers from the regional and the Nsawam Adoagyiri Municipal Directorate of Health converged at the community to first sensitise pupils of Fotobi Local Authority Basic School after which they marched through the community to create awareness on the need for proper hand washing.

Mrs Augustina Nartey, the Regional Coordinator for Community Health Planning Services, said washing hands properly with soap was integral in ensuring good health in households and appealed to the Fotobi community members to attach value to the exercise.

She discussed with the children and parents in the community on the symptoms of cholera and urged them to rush to the health centre as soon as they observe the symptom.

Mr George Sakyi Djan, the former Assembly member for Fotobi, expressed gratitude to the Ghana Health Service for organizing the durbar and expressed optimism that it would impact positively on their lives.

He urged parents and children to use soap and water before eating or after visiting the toilet.
