Officials of the Asante Mampong National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) say they have instituted measures to avoid stampede and panic during the upcoming biometric registration in the Municipality.

The Ashanti Regional Office of the National Health Insurance Authority has already began registration in five districts, amid reports of pockets of panic registration.

But, Mr Kwadwo Antwi-Boasiako, Public Relations Officer of the Mampong NHIS, told the Ghana News Agency on Tuesday that there was no need for people to rush or panic, since both old and new cards would be used, while the registration process was also non-stop.

He said: “We are going to start on July 23, and with our intense public education, we are calling on people, especially those with unexpired cards, to hold on a while because the registration process is going to stay…it is permanent.”

He said registration would begin with pregnant women, children, the aged, new members and those with emergency cases, and gradually roll out to cover old subscribers. Mr Antwi-Boasiako also indicated that the registration fee for new members is GH¢15, while those coming for renewal is GH¢14.

However, he added that new subscribers under 18 years would pay GH¢4, and the same would go for new persons who are 70 years and above, but old persons under 18 are expected to pay GH¢2, while those 70 years and above, would pay same. Registration is already underway in Asokwa in Kumasi, Ahafo-Ano North, Ahafo-Ano South, Atwima Mponua and Nwabiagya.
