The Medical and Dental Council (MDC) has arrested four individuals for practising medicine without a licence as part of its ongoing clampdown on quackery in Ghana’s health sector.
Speaking at a press briefing on September 5, 2025, the Registrar of the MDC, Dr Divine Ndonbi Banyubala, said the problem is widespread and cuts across regions and health-related fields.
The suspects — Kate Baidoo of Osag Medical Centre (Nsakena), Ebenezer Koomson of E & E Medical Centre (Gomoa Afransi), Innocent Tagbovi of Mighty Clinic (Madina), and Ebenezer Sarpong of Goodcare Medical Centre (Swalaba Bukom) — were apprehended in undercover operations conducted between September 2024 and August 2025.
According to the MDC, several other individuals are under investigation, with their cases expected to be prosecuted in court.

The Council also uncovered forged academic certificates submitted by some applicants seeking authorization to practice in Ghana.
Dr Banyubala described quackery as one of the major threats to the country’s medical profession, stressing that the problem is widespread and persistent.
To curb the menace, the MDC is collaborating with the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) to introduce a practitioner name tag and stamp policy by 2026.
“That is why we are working with the NHIA to ensure that any professional in a healthcare setting is properly tagged. The aim is to reduce patient confusion, since not everyone in a hospital environment is a medical doctor,” he explained.
The initiative will require healthcare providers to display official identification, including names, photographs, and professional designations, to protect patients and restore trust in the system.
Dr Banyubala assured the public that the Council remains committed to safeguarding the integrity of the profession and ensuring patient safety.
