Kumasi, Sept. 18, GNA - About two-thirds of deaths in adults in the country is caused by heart diseases and stroke. A statement by Dr Alfred Doku, Chairman of the National Planning Committee of the World Health Day Celebration, said half of the deaths occur in people in the productive sector, something that is seriously affecting productivity at the work place.
This year's World Health Day falls on September, 26 and the statement was meant to solicit public support towards its celebration. It would be under the theme "work with heart" and is targeted at workers across the nation because of the high incidence of deaths caused by heart diseases and stroke among adults.
Dr Doku said the high mortality rate caused by these diseases in the productive sector was the reason for the focus of this year's celebration on "a healthy heart at the work place."
The celebrations would be held in all regional capitals and marked by health walk, medical screening, outreach programmes and awareness creation.
Dr Doku called on all workers, especially those in the formal sector, to actively participate in the celebrations and check their health status in order to seek early treatment if they were diagnosed of any diseases.
