Akwatia, Aug. 11, GNA - The National Mosquito Control Programme (NAMCOP), in the Kwaebibirem District was on Tuesday launched at Akwatia in the Eastern Region. The event followed a two-hour clean-up exercise, which involved desilting of major drains and spraying of possible breeding grounds of mosquitoes. Nana Owoahene Acheampong, Nation-wide Ambassador of the Programme, challenged communities to undertake regular clean-up to eliminate mosquito. Mr Danso Obeng, in charge of NAMCOP in the region, said programme was launched at Akwatia because of the numerous mined-out pits that bred mosquitoes in the town. The Akwatiahene, Osabarima Kofi Boateng III decried the unwillingness of the people to undertake communal labour and advised them to clean their environment. Mr. Charles Atta Mensah, Deputy Kwaebibirem District Co-ordinating Director, noted that malaria caused a reduction in productivity. There was therefore the need for environmental cleanliness in the battle against malaria. The Eastern Regional Deputy Minister, Mr Baba Jamal, advised persons engaged in the mosquito spraying to be dedicated to their work.
