The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) says the current cost structure of the scheme is not sustainable to enable it meet the growing demands of subscribers.

Public Relations Officer of the NHIA, Selorm Adonoo, says the scheme over the period has had to rely on investment to sustain its operations, suggesting the current burden on its finances may lead to reforms.

He told Fiifi Banson on Anopa Kasapa on Kasapa 102.3 FM that the scheme is putting in place measures to help it regain user confidence.

Adorno’s admission of a frustrated NHIA comes in the wake of calls on government by the Society of Private Medical and Dental Practitioners (SPMDP) Ghana, to immediately clear about GH¢500 million arrears owed service providers to the Scheme (NHIS).

“We have a meeting with them by Thursday to discuss this. We’ll consider if there can be payment strategy in place to defray the cost. NHIA has grown over time; needs of the people have changed, and we need to find ways of refinancing this,” Adorno said of a possible engagement with the SPMDP.
