The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) is performing cataract surgeries for 58 residents of the Manhyia South Constituency to correct vision impairments. The initiative is being sponsored by Nana Agyei Baffour-Awuah, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Parliamentary Aspirant for Manhyia South in the Ashanti Region.
This health screening forms part of activities marking Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The beneficiaries were identified during an outreach event held on Saturday in collaboration with the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and Clarion Medical Center, Accra.
The patrons underwent comprehensive medical examinations, including free eye tests. Mr. Awuah, who is seeking to succeed Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh—now the running mate of the NPP Flagbearer—also took the opportunity to engage with constituents, sharing some of his policies and aspirations if elected.
He explained the reasoning behind the screening and free eye care services for the residents, which included elderly men and women.
“From my house-to-house engagements in the constituency, I noticed that in almost every home, at least one person was suffering from cataracts,” Mr. Awuah told the Ghana News Agency. “Therefore, in conducting a general health screening, we decided to include eye examinations for the residents of Manhyia South Constituency.”
Some beneficiaries expressed their gratitude to Mr. Awuah for supporting the initiative and called on fellow constituents to support him in the upcoming December polls.
Maame Malley, a resident who accompanied her mother to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, thanked the politician and the medical team for their assistance.
“I was supposed to pay GH¢3,000 for the surgery, but I was told the cost had been covered. I want to thank our incoming MP for this wonderful intervention,” she said. “I believe he will do more when he wins the seat, and I encourage all voters in the constituency to come out and vote massively for Mr. Awuah.”
