Director General of Ghana Health Service (GHS), Dr Ebenezer Appiah Denkyira on Friday launched the National Immunisation Day (NIDs) in Accra, which aims at protecting children against vaccine preventable diseases such as polio.
After the launch, Dr Denkyira visited some vaccinations points in the Ledzokuku-Krowor Municipality in Accra.
He noted that the programme is to create awareness of the need to immunise children from zero to five years against polio; a deadly disease that disable them.
Dr Leticia Asomani-Wiafe, Municipal Director of GHS said: “As a municipality, we are ... looking out for malnourished children. Our target population 0 to 59 months are 62,574. During the previous exercise in June this year, we vaccinated 95 per cent of the eligible and hope to do better this time round,” she said.
She said the municipality needs three EPI fridges “for our facilities, as a municipality we have only 21 hanging scales and five toddler scales serving 59 outreaches. We need one each per vaccination site”.
The GHS is organising the second round of NID, which is a synchronised programme for the West African sub-Region.
It would be done from house to house to cover all communities.
