Accra, Feb 24, GNA - The Accra Number Four branch of the Neoplan Drivers' Union of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union, has initiated a 22-million-cedi National Health Insurance Policy for its 108 members. Mr Martin Agyei-Kumi, Secretary of the Union, who disclosed this to the Ghana News Agency in an interview in Accra, said a cheque covering the amount would be paid into the coffers of the scheme. He said the Union initiated the policy, because of the importance it attached to the health needs of its members whose profession involved a lot of risk.
Mr Agyei-Kumi stated further that the Union had acquired a piece of land at Kasoa to put up a three-storey hostel for its members. The branch secretary said work on the project would start next month, adding that, another 110 plots of land had been acquired at Gomoa Buduburam, to build residential accommodation.
He reminded members that the Union would lose the land if they failed to develop the plots.
Mr Agyei-Kumi said the Union had resolved to intensify its defence/safe driving programmes for members this year, to help reduce accidents on the highways.
