Nurses call for improved facilities and tools

Ho, April 7, GNA - Nurses in the Volta Region on Wednesday appealed to government for improved facilities and tools to enable them and other health workers to deliver more professional services to clients. They said lack of appropriate tools and facilities in the hospitals and clinics constituted a major challenge to their professionalism having been trained with such tools and expressed the hope that the situation would be resolved quickly. The nurses made the appeal during an interaction with the media in Ho as part of activities marking the Golden Jubilee Celebration of the Ghana Registered Nurses Association (GRNA). The celebration is on the theme; "GRNA moving nursing into professional excellence."

They said lack of equipment and working tools was a major cause of the falling image of the profession. "Apart from being under staffed, we are always improvising, a situation our clients find difficult to understand creating an image problem for us," Mr Samuel Agbo, the Volta Regional Chairman of the association, said. He said the expectation of the public from nurses was high and that without the necessary working tools they could not deliver to meet such expectations.

Mr Agbo appealed to the public to remain hopeful and have trust in the professional competence of nurses. Mrs Margaret Obirikorang, the Volta Regional Public Relations Officer of GRNA, said the Association was organizing seminars and training sessions to enhance the communication skills of its members to improve nurse/patient relationship and urged members to take such trainings seriously.
