OAfrica over the weekend hosted its first Health Fair, which aimed to assist children and young people receiving support from the organization, but extended its support to Ghanaians more broadly.
The young people receiving support from OAfrica decided that instead of just being the recipients of support from the organisation, they too wanted to extend their support to others in need. Therefore, they decided to donate their blood to the Korle Bu Blood Bank, in recognition of the shortage of blood supply in Ghana.
Over 400 people attended the hugely successful OAfrica Health Fair, held in the Ayenyah village. The fair aimed at ensuring the health and well being of the children and young people who OAfrica supports. A full day of activities were undertaken including health screening, vaccinations, eye screening and blood donations.
The Health Fair provided the perfect opportunity to educate the children, young people and caregivers on the recent outbreaks of cholera and ebola. All 400 people in attendance had the opportunity to watch an informative drama to educate and raise awareness on the prevention and treatment of these killer illnesses, which is crucial considering the current situation of the region.
To ensure the day was well enjoyed by those in attendance, the OAfrica culture group and Villy & The Xtreme Volumes performed - to much enthusiasm from all those present. They brought much joy and happiness to everyone after a day of needles, tests and blood donations.
OAfrica helps previously institutionalised children and young adults in need of special care, support or protection to become productive members of the community. They strengthen families and reintegrate children into safe, stable and loving environments.
OAfrica works closely with the Department of Social Welfare, and is strongly supportive of the Care Reform Initiative, which was established in 2008. The goal of the Care Reform Initiative is the establishment of a more consistent and stable approach to caring for vulnerable children in Ghana so that each child will be assured of a permanent home in a supportive and loving family.
