Sylvester Mensah, Chief Executive Officer of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA)has re-iterated that the one-time premium for the National health Insurance Scheme is irreversible and urged the staff to support and help the authority to fast track its early implementation. He was speaking at a meeting with all the scheme Managers and their Accountants in Tamale. Mr Mensah said Ghana's National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) was set to become a global model. He was optimistic that with innovations being adopted into the workings of the Scheme, the NHIS would develop to gain global appeal. Mr. Mensah called on officials of the Scheme to get accustomed to the new trends of the scheme’s innovations.

He was optimistic that with innovations being adopted into the workings of the Scheme, the NHIS would develop to gain global appeal. Mr. Mensah called on officials of the Scheme to get accustomed to the new trends of the scheme’s innovations. Meanwhile what appears to be an upward adjustment of the premium of the National Health Insurance Scheme is creating tension between quality healthcare seekers and management of the Tamale metropolitan scheme secretariat. Nerve-racking complaints indicate that the premium which used to be GH 3 cedis for children below 18 and GH 7. 20 pesewas for the adult class has been adjusted to GH 5 cedis and GH 12. 50 pesewas in the said categories. Apart from that, fresh applicants are requested to pay additional GH 4 cedis before collecting the card and this situation is sending signals that the implementation of the time premium health insurance policy could be faced with challenges. Citi News as part of its monitoring mechanisms bumped into a scuffle between some beneficiaries and officials of the scheme at one of the registration centres opposite the Tamale Post office and these were some comments made by the aggrieved beneficiaries. Attempts to reach both the Tamale Metro and Regional Secretariat of the National Health Insurance Scheme did not yield any positive result.
