Over two hundred children in Sakumono, a suburb of Tema, on Friday benefited from a free health screening exercise organized and funded by the Tema Lions Club in collaboration with the Accra Ultimate Lions Club,

The programme dubbed: Back to School health fair, included physical, dental, hearing and sight examination whiles babies and toddlers were immunized.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Mr Charles Ninsin, President, Tema Lions Club, said the healthcare check is an activity that the Lions Club worldwide embarks on during the month of August every year to promote volunteerism and also to engage young people.

Mr Ninsin said the healthcare check is part of activities of the club’s youth wing called Leo club, which affords the young members the opportunity to interact with other young people.

According to him, such social projects also offer them the opportunity to help young people to develop skills while emphasizing the role of the youth in community development as they identify needs within the community and work together to find solutions.

Mrs. Monica Owusu Afoakwah, Principal Nursing Officer, Public Health, Tema General Hospital, who was in charge of the screening exercise, educated the children on personal hygiene practices.

Mrs. Afoakwah, who, also educated them on the Cholera outbreak and the Ebola epidemic in the sub region, asked them to make the personal effort to stay healthy.

She encouraged both parents and children to keep their surroundings clean and stay away from bush meat.
