Accra, June 28, GNA- A 150-watt solar plant and a refrigerator was on Saturday donated to Oyibi Health Centre by Deng Solar Training Centre (DSTC) at Oyibi in the Tema Metropolis.
The multi-purpose solar plant would serve as a source of energy for the refrigerator, bulbs and could store power for three days. The refrigerator would be used to store vaccines whiles the bulb would provide lights.
Mr Samuel Adu-Asare Manager of Global Sustainable Energy Solutions Ghana Limited, a Deng subsidiary told the GNA that, DSTC realized that the health facility needed social amenities such as potable water, electricity and good roads that would facilitate their quest to save life, hence the donation.
He said, currently, it was the only health facility in a rural area which was using solar energy since the only generator provided since its establishment about three years ago broke down.
According him Deng Limited, a solar company also donated a tracking solar plant to the clinic but due to poor maintenance of the plant by the Ghana Health Service (GHS) the plant did not operate efficiently. Mr Adu-Asare called on GHS to help revitalize the clinic since it would benefit the people in the community, especially at the time the population was growing rapidly.
hMr Stephen Obeng, Senior Medical Assistant who received the donation said people in the area were not able to patronize the facility due to the poor nature of the road. He said because the health centre lacked accommodation and other amenities, personnel posted to the centre feel reluctant to go to work, adding, "this is because one has to walk close to 3 kilometres from Oyibi junction to work".
He said two years ago, when he was posted to the Centre, the GHS employed the services of two security men who withdrew their services because they have not been paid for sometime now. Mr. Hopeson Adorye, Assembly Member for Tunmai Electoral area said the problems of the Centre had been communicated to the Tema Municipal Health Directorate of GHS and the Metropolitan Assembly but they have turned deaf ears to their plight. He called on GHS and the government to come to the aid of the Health Centre since it could be put to good use, if properly furnished and managed. 28 June 08
