A new intensive care unit has been commissioned at the Police Hospital to aid treatment of patients who need critical care.
The two-bed unit which boasts of a set of complete intensive care apparatus, including oxygen mask, blood test machines and other equipment for thorough care comes after 38 years of the establishment of the hospital.
The ICU, located within the hospitals administration block, was constructed out of three staff offices at a total cost of GHc250,000.
Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Ahmed Alhassan, who commissioned the unit in a short ceremony, indicated that the Police Hospital had come of age to have its own critical care facilities to benefit its men and women as well as the general public.
He recalled the 38years of stress that staff of the hospital had to go through in discharging their duties, but was happy that with the new focus of generating funds internally to develop the hospital, there would be a significant improvement in the hospital’s healthcare delivery system.
The IGP appealed to the staff of the ICU to make sacrifices in the interim to work extra hours as management makes provision to employ more ICU specialised nurses.
Medical Director of the Police Hospital, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Seidu Mohammed Zachariah, was full of appreciation to the IGP for what he described as passionate support to ensure that the refurbishment of the ICU was completed on time besides providing the necessary financial commitments.
The medical director also mentioned that the Ministry of Health (MoH) donated a set of ICU equipment to the hospital which has gone a long way to inspire its operations.
DCOP Zachariah, however, charged patients or their dependants to be prepared to pay the related bills for sustaining the unit since managing an ICU is very demanding.
