Prof Nii Otu Nartey, the Chief Executive Officer of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, has said projects in the Hospital were expected to be completed by the end of December.
He said the hospital for the first time since its establishment was undertaking a $250 million National Equipment Replacement project.
Some of the equipment are magnetic resonance imaging machines, computed tomography machine, mammogram and some general X-Ray machines for the Radiology Department, replacement of equipment with new and modern equipment for 13 of the 24 theaters, the rehabilitation of the Paediatric Surgery Unit theater, Catering and Laundry departments.
Prof. Nartey, who was addressing the media on Wednesday in Accra, said infrastructure was a major challenge facing the hospital and was grateful to government.
He said the Ministry of Health had also procured theater equipment that includes anesthetic machines for the theaters and a new oxygen machine.
Prof Nartey said a 3million euro eye centre funded by the Moorfields Eye Centre, UK, and Rotary Club International, was also underway.
He noted that apart from these projects which have some external support, the hospital and some departments were undertaking other projects to enhance service delivery.
He said fibre optic cable had been laid in the hospital to enable teleconferencing and other information technology related applications to be undertaken including renovation work at the OPD and the fourth floor of the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department.
A new blood bank, expected to be completed by 2013, is also being built and will comprise an administration, laboratories and storage rooms.
Mr. Joaquin Royar, Coordinator and Project Manager of Medical Equipment Replacement Project, said the project is expected to be completed by the end of September.
Dr Nichodemous Kafui Gebe, Head of the Biomedical Engineering Department, Ministry of Health, said because of the governments’ determination to improve health care delivery in the country, all teaching and regional hospitals would benefit from the equipments. **
