The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has warned of the arrest and prosecution of people caught peddling unregistered herbal products.

Mr. Vigil Edward Prah-Ashun, the Ashanti Regional Officer said the authority would stop at nothing to protect public health.

He therefore called on traditional medicine practitioners to make sure that their products – drugs, food supplements and cosmetics, received the seal of approval from the FDA.

He was speaking at a day’s workshop held for members of the Plant Medicine and Traditional Healers Association in Kumasi.

It provided the platform to discuss ways to bring some sanity into traditional medicine practice.

Mr. Prah-Ashun appealed for public cooperation, support and understanding to rid the country of unwholesome foods and drugs.

An executive member of the Ghana Herbal Students Association (GHEMSA) of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Mr. Ebenezer Agyemang, said more should be done to regulate herbal medicine practice.

He said standards must be set for quality assurance and help to remove quacks.
