Physiotherapists, Mark Sackeyfio, and Ms. Louisa Afi Borlu have stated that parents should stop dragging and lifting their children up by one arm since the action can lead to rotator cuff injuries that can easily damage the shoulder.

They explained rotator cuff as the shoulder, emphasizing that, even though the shoulder is the most mobile joint in the human body, it needs muscles to hold it in place— and there are four muscles that stabilize the shoulder, called the rotator cuff muscles.

They said rotator cuff injuries are mainly caused by traumatic experiences and extreme overuse of the shoulder; highlighting sportsmen and women and people who engage in repetitive movements, like painters, bodybuilders, carpenters, and swimmers, more likely to experience rotator cuff injuries. “From age forty people are more prone to having rotator cuff injuries,” they revealed.

They said people who injury their shoulders should visit the hospital; the doctor will recommend an MRI scan to diagnose the type of injury and grade. They said physiotherapy exercises and movements aid recovery and therefore urged the public to keep up with exercises approved by their medical practitioners.

They said it is important to keep injured arms or shoulders in moderate motion because, according to recent research, keeping the injured arm or shoulder fixed for long can also lead to another condition known as frozen shoulder.

The Physiotherapists, Mark Sackeyfio, and Ms. Louisa Afi Borlu, made these comments on #StayAlive segment of HSTV’s Morning Show, #HealthyMorning, talking to Cecilia Anno-Barnieh about rotator cuff injuries.
