Take maternal health seriously - Lordina Mahama

First Lady Lordina Mahama has emphasised the need for issues affecting women’s health to be taken seriously.

According to her women represent 70 per cent of persons affected by HIV and other reproductive diseases hence needed to be given the necessary attention.

The First Lady made the call when she interacted and presented large quantities of medical equipment and supplies, gas cookers, bales of mosquito nets, to various hospitals, laptops to the schools, and sewing machines for dressmakers among others to the Mim, Hwidiem, and Kenyasi communities in the Brong Ahafo Region.

Mrs. Mahama described the situation as very alarming considering that women were the backbone of Ghana’s economy. She urged all, especially men, to take an interest in the health of their wives.

The Lordina Foundation, with the support of its partners, MedShare of the United States, has continued to provide medical supplies and equipment to deprived communities in the country in its quest to complement the government’s efforts at providing quality healthcare for the people.

Mrs. Mahama said health facilities in the country needed a range of equipment and supplies to deal with the cases they handle on a daily basis.

She said while the government was investing heavily in healthcare, many deprived health facilities still lacked medical equipment and to support government’s efforts, the Lordina Foundation had acquired and presented a number of items to many hospitals across nine regions in Ghana.

“My foundation, with the support of partners and sponsors, has been mobilising support over the past several years to enhance quality healthcare in under-served and deprived localities,” she revealed.

She said the development of a nation depended on the health of its citizens and it was against this background that government continued to invest heavily in healthcare.

Mrs. Mahama said the her foundation’s medical mission module assists government by conducting medical outreaches across the country and these outreaches provide free HIV, cervical and breast cancer screening and counselling services and through such efforts, lives were being saved.

“The Lordina Foundation has been working to enhance quality healthcare in many districts and community-based health facilities and the latest donation to the three health facilities in the region brings the number of beneficiaries to over 52.

She urged all stakeholders to advocate and work to ensure that they make investments in the health of the people, particularly the younger ones, adding: “We can avoid deaths caused by preventable diseases or conditions by ensuring that there is adequate access to sexual and reproductive health information and services.

Mrs. Mahama said in current times, there were avenues for providing information and services to adolescents and young persons to prevent the contraction of sexually transmitted infections and unwanted pregnancies. “Our youth are our future. Let us ensure they grow up in a healthy and safe environment,” she appealed.

“We must acknowledge that essential players in ensuring quality healthcare are our doctors and nurses. In view of this, the Lordina Foundation with its partners will do all it can to provide them with necessary resources to make healthcare delivery easier for our medical professionals.”

The First Lady assured that her foundation would continue to support the effort of government to deliver world-class healthcare to the people of Ghana, because health is wealth and helps build a mighty nation.

She commended the health workers in the three communities for making a difference in healthcare delivery in that part of the country.

Mrs. Mahama expressed her profound gratitude to MedShare USA for their support in making the presentation of these items possible.

The chiefs of the three communities all expressed their appreciation to the Lordina Foundation for its continued support to hospitals and health facilities as well as educational institutions.
