Accra, Feb. 2, GNA - The Dutch Government has offered 17 million Euros to renovate the Tamale General Hospital to give it a formal status of a Teaching Hospital under the University of Development Studies. The general renovation of the Hospital, which would cost 45 million Euros, would have the Ghana government bearing 4.5 million Euros with the rest coming from other sources.

Lepuwura Alhaji Mohammed N. Jawula, Chief Director of the Ministry of Health, who said this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Accra on Friday, said the Ministry also intended to upgrade other health centres to clinics.

He explained that the Consultant to work on the project was reviewing work to be done, saying at the moment a new mortuary had been built.

Lepuwura said in order to improve the provision of health care facilities and ensure that health facilities were extended to every corner; three new hospitals would be built this year at Asem in the Bia District of the Western Region; Ajumako in the Central Region and Zabzuzu Tatale in the Northern Region.

He explained that 10.5 million dollars would be required for the establishment of the three hospitals and the OPEC Fund had put in 8.5 million dollars whilst Ghana government would fund the rest. "OPEC has already given us a no objection signal to proceed and by the middle of the year hopefully, these projects would take off." He gave the assurance that the Government was very particular about the health care of the people and would ensure that quality services and facilities were offered.
