Teshie to get Nursing Training School

Accra, Nov. 11, GNA - A Nursing Training School is to be opened soon in Teshie, Deputy Minister of Health Dr (Mrs) Gladys Ashitey announced at a forum for members of her constituency on Saturday.

Speaking at the 'Meet Your MP Forum,' Dr Ashitey said construction of the school building was underway and admission of students would begin immediately after the facility was completed.

She said the project, the result of her personal initiative, stemmed from the increasing number of applicants within the Teshie area, who had gained admission to Nursing and Midwifery Training Schools in recent years.

The forum, the second to be held provided a platform for constituents to put forward their views on issues concerning the development of the area.

Dr. Ashitey said despite the challenges and Disappointments, a lot had been achieved in the areas of education, health, road and drainage construction under her stewardship.

On education, she said since it was the backbone of the country's development, she had spared no effort to ensuring that, schools in the area received the best to promote sound and quality education.

Some of the efforts to promote good education included financial assistance to 80 students from public schools to enable them to gain admission into senior high schools in the 2005/6 academic year, the school feeding programme, the institution of the Best Teacher Award for teachers in the constituency, among others.

Dr. Ashitey said besides education, other social Amenities to improve the lives of members in the various communities had been provided. For example, one hundred and forty-three low voltage streetlights have been installed in the various communities in Teshie as a first phase project. On water supply, Dr Ashitey said efforts were underway to ensure continuous supply of water to the area.

In this direction, the main pipe lines had been extended in to most communities while a Non-Governmental Organisation has also promised to assist in water delivery by donating a tanker to the community.

Dr. Ashitey appealed to the opinion leaders, retired civil servants, the clergy and traditional leaders to put their expertise, suggestions and criticisms to ensure sustainable development in the area.
