Thirteen pregnant women tested positive to HIV

Mamponteng (Ash), Jan. 25, GNA - Thirteen pregnant women in the Kwabre District who went for voluntary HIV testing in 2006 proved positive, Mr Yaw Sarbeng, the District Pharmacist and acting District Director of Health Services, has said.

Seven out of the 13 have delivered and have been put on drugs to prevent a possible transmission of the virus to their babies through breast-feeding.

Mr Sarpong was presenting a report on the activities of the Health Directorate for 2006 at an annual Health Review stakeholders meeting at Mamponteng on Tuesday.

He said recorded cases of HIV/AIDS in the district were 84 in 2005 and this reduced to 64 during the year under review adding that no guinea worm cases were reported in the district. Mr Sarpong called for support from all stakeholders to ensure quality and affordable health care delivery in the district. 25 Jan 07
