Tigo Ghana, a telecom operator, has renovated the Maternity Unit of the New Tafo Government Hospital in the East Akim District of the Eastern Region.

Before the refurbishment the nurses had no wardrobes to changeover and the bathroom floors were not tiled.

Also, both the newly born babies and their mothers had no insecticide treated mosquito nets even though this is highly recommended by the World Health Organisation to prevent newborn babies from getting malaria.

Roshi Motman, Chief Executive Officer, Tigo Ghana, said the renovation would ensure that babies were delivered safely every day in a more congenial and safe environment.

She said the refurbishment underscored Tigo's commitment to support health delivery in deprived communities across the country.

“For us coming to the aid of the hospital was an opportunity to help reduce maternal and child mortality by providing a conducive environment in which mothers can have safe delivery,” she said.

Motman said Tigo would continue to extend resources to areas that would impact positively on Ghanaians.

Dr Joseph Kojo Tambil, Medical Superintendent of New Tafo Government Hospital, and Osabarima Adusei Peasah IV, Akyem Tafohene, thanked Tigo for renovating the ward and appealed for more support for the hospital.

Osabarima Adusei called for unity among the people in the community and surrounding areas to enhance development.
