A Urology and Modern Surgical Centre has been opened at Nanton Zuo, a suburb of Tamale, to provide specialist medical services to the public.
It would also serve as an additional space to augment services at the Tamale Teaching Hospital.
The facility, constructed by Le Mete Ghana, a Tamale-based non-governmental organisation, would train urologists.
Dr Jacob Mahama, Northern Regional Director of Ghana Health Service, who spoke during the opening of the facility, described it as one of a kind in the country providing specialist medical services in urology, and forms of surgical assistance including neurosurgery.
Dr Mahama said the dispersed and deprived nature of the region has implications for health care delivery and lauded Le Mete Ghana for siting the facility in a rural area.
He said it would help to augment the provision of quality health care to all.
Dr Akis Afoko, Consultant Urologist and President of Le Mete Ghana said: “With the completion of the Theatre Project, we are in a position to provide heavily subsidised and where necessary free but modern health care to rural patients from the Savannah Accelerated Development Authority zone.”
Dr Afoko said the facility would also support the University for Development Studies’ School of Medicine and Health Sciences in training young medical practitioners to see medical work as a sacrifice to humanity.
He expressed gratitude to Le Mete Onlus Italia, a sister organisation of Le Mete Ghana, for working closely with it to execute the project including other activities carried out over the years such as sponsorship of treatment of children with childhood cancers, outreach programmes to deprived communities amongst others.
