Veterinary services take measures to fight rabies.

The Veterinary Services Department in Tarkwa will undertake a mass anti-rabies vaccination campaign in the Tarkwa Nsueam and Prestea Huni/Valley districts.

The campaign, which is scheduled to take place in July, is aimed at controlling the rabies which is on the increase; the Municipal Veterinary Officer of Tarkwa Nsueam, Dr. Simon Gbene, told journalists at a press conference on Thursday.

He said the Department had recorded five suspected cases of rabies within one week.

He said the Department is undertaking this emergency vaccination campaign to enable them curb the spread of the disease which has been identified in 14 communities in the two districts.

Dr. Gbene said the Department had targeted to vaccinate 17,216 animals and these include dogs, cats and monkeys and added that mining companies had been written to for financial support to make the exercise free of charge.

However, he said, if no support comes then the Department would charge GH?2 for each animal vaccinated. **
