Mankranso (Ash), Aug 29, GNA- Mr Alfred Amo, Ahafo-Ano South District Director of Food and Agriculture, has urged farmers to take advantage of the enabling environment and venture into livestock production.

This, he said, would help produce more food to feed the nation and improve the protein consumption of the people. Mr Amo was speaking at a day's workshop on prevention of bird flu and African swine fever organized by the District Directorate of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA) for 40 participants at Mankranso.

It was attended by poultry and livestock farmers as well as officials of MOFA and was aimed at sensitising them on how to detect and manage the diseases.

He said MOFA had put in place adequate measures to check the outbreak of bird flu and African swine fever in the country. The District Director of Agriculture therefore appealed to the participants especially poultry and livestock farmers to report any outbreak of such diseases to the veterinary officers for prompt treatment and control.

Mr Daniel Asimenu, District Veterinary Officer, advised them to inspect the identities of veterinary officers before allowing them to treat their animals to help flush out the quack ones. He appealed to the District Assembly to come out with byelaws to enable them to prosecute recalcitrant farmers who refuse to vaccinate their animals against diseases.
