The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Yilo Krobo Municipal Assembly, Francis Addo Akumatey, has led a major sanitation exercise in Somanya aimed at promoting environmental cleanliness and encouraging residents to maintain good hygiene practices.

The exercise, which took place along Djaba Road in the early hours of last Saturday, brought together assembly members, staff of the assembly, traders, youth groups, and residents who actively participated in sweeping the streets, clearing heaps of refuse, and desilting choked gutters in various parts of the town.

The exercise focused on key areas within Somanya, including market centres, lorry stations, and major streets where waste accumulation had become a concern for residents and authorities.

Speaking during the exercise, Akumatey emphasised the importance of sanitation in ensuring a healthy environment and preventing the outbreak of diseases.

He noted that maintaining clean surroundings is a shared responsibility and called on residents to support the assembly’s efforts to improve sanitation in the municipality.

He noted that poor sanitation continued to pose a major challenge in many communities and said only sustained, collective commitment from all stakeholders could address it.

“The assembly alone cannot keep the municipality clean. It requires the active participation of residents to ensure that our environment remains healthy and safe for everyone,” he stated.

Akumatey also urged residents to avoid indiscriminate dumping of refuse and instead make use of designated waste disposal sites.

He encouraged households and businesses to adopt proper waste management practices to help maintain cleanliness in their communities.

Assembly officials said the cleanup formed part of ongoing efforts to improve environmental hygiene across the municipality and would continue periodically to keep communities clean and livable.

Residents who joined the exercise welcomed the initiative and thanked the MCE and the assembly for leading the effort.

Some said regular cleanups would help curb waste buildup and improve public health.

The exercise ended with a renewed call from the assembly urging residents to take personal responsibility for keeping their surroundings clean and to support community-led sanitation efforts in the Municipality.
