The Chairman of Parliament’s Health Committee, Mark Kurt Nawaane, has delivered a strong message to medical professionals struggling with the pressures of their job, "if you can no longer cope, it’s time to step aside."

His comments come after a parliamentary probe into the death of engineer Charles Amissah, a case that has triggered fresh outrage over standards of emergency care in Ghana.

“If you are a medical professional and you are tired of the work, you probably have to... you can resign. I’m telling you, Ghana will survive. If you are ready to work there are ethics,” Nawaane said on May 7, 2026, stressing that Ghana’s healthcare system depends on ethical commitment and professionalism.

The remarks followed the presentation of a report by a three-member investigative committee, chaired by Agyeman Badu Akosah, to the parliamentary committee. The report recommended disciplinary action against several health workers for alleged breaches of professional duty in handling Amissah’s medical emergency.

Nawaane who is also the Member of Parliament for Nabdam on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) praised the investigative team for taking a more transparent approach, especially by naming individuals involved in the case.

“Immediately we started and mentioned medical negligence and even started coming up with names, and I said thank God, this is a step forward,” he said.

He contrasted this report with past investigations that mostly blamed health facilities rather than holding specific people accountable.

“Now we are saying that it is beyond just a facility. It is the individuals,” he added.

The committee chair also reminded doctors of their professional responsibilities, urging them to follow ethics and seek help when faced with difficult situations.

“If you are ready to work, please, there are ethics. If you can’t do something, you call your colleague doctor, your senior doctor,” he said.

The committee’s recommendations are expected to guide further actions by the relevant health authorities.
