Agona Nyakrom (C/R), Jan 8, GNA - A total of sixteen buruli ulcer cases were recorded at the Nyakrom Health Center in the Agona District last year, Mr James Parris Mensah, Medical Assistant of the Centre, has stated.
Speaking at the end of year health review of the Nyakrom sub-district, Mr Mensah said 16 abnormal sores were reported but 14 were proved to be buruli ulcer, according to a research by Doctors at the Agona Swedru Government Hospital.
He said the research showed that the disease was prevalent in the Nyakrom area and called on the people to report all abnormal sores to the health authorities.
The Medical Assistant stated that 121 teenage pregnancies involving girls between the ages of 14 and 19 were recorded in the Nyakrom area while 11 cases of TB were received at the Health Centre. A total of 3,280 cases of malaria, 716 cases of meseals mostly children and 342 for tetanus were also reported.
The Medical Assistant expressed concern about the low patronage of the centre and said most patients travelled to Asikuma, Agona Swedru, Agona Duakwa and Apam for treatment and assured the Chiefs and the people of the area that personnel of the Centre were prepared to render quality service.
Mr Mensah expressed concern about the encroachment of the Centre's land and appealed to the citizens and the District Assembly to provide accommodation for the health workers. Nana Kofi Otoo, Obaatan of Nyakrom, appealed to the Ministry of Health to upgrade the Centre into a Clinic to improve health delivery to the people.
He praised the health workers for their hard work and dedication. Nana Kwesi Akufo, Omankrando of Nyakrom, appealed to the people to exercise restraint since the nurses and paramedical staff were working under constrain due to lack of accommodation and other facilities. He cautioned those encroaching on the Centre's land to stop before they were brought before the Chiefs since the parcel was given to the government for the future upgrading and provision of more facilities.
