Tema, Jan 12, GNA - The Out Patient Department (OPD) attendance of the Tema General Hospital (TGH) increased from 138,460 in 2005 to 168,805 in 2006 with malaria followed by hypertension topping the list of cases.

The Maternity Department recorded 5,421 deliveries while the Surgical Department performed 2,310 surgeries in 2006. The Medical Superintendent of the Hospital, Dr (Mrs) Charity Sarpong, gave the records at the end of year staff Awards Durbar in Tema on Friday, during which, 90 staff and 11 retirees received awards for their outstanding performance.

She said the Hospital had a staff of over 500, 344 beds, 10 wards, 19 consulting rooms as well as two operating theatres.

The Medical Superintendent however, expressed concern about the deplorable conditions under, which the staff worked and appealed for support from the Government and other stakeholders including industries and Companies in the Municipality to deliver quality services. She commended the award winners for their dedication and commitment and appealed to the staff to provide services in a humane, serene and polite atmosphere.

Dr Charity Sarpong said various programmes on topics like customer/client relationship would be organised for staff of the hospital this year, to build a culture of efficiency and hard work. The Deputy Chief Health Services Administrator, Mr Asamoah Bediako, regretted that because of lack of education many patients reported at the Hospital with little knowledge on how to use the National Health Insurance Scheme.

The Deputy Director of Nursing Services, Mrs Emily Barnes, stressed the need for the staff to work in unity and to show love to patients to make the Hospital "a patient friendly hospital".
