Manso-Nkwanta (Ash), Feb 1, GNA - Mr George Isaac Amoo, National Co-ordinator of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), on Wednesday said the organisation is mobilising the necessary resources towards the treatment and management of Buruli Ulcer in the Amansie West district.
Mr Amoo said this at Manso-Nkwanta when he paid a day's visit to the Amansie West district as part of his working visit to the Ashanti region.
He said the mobilisation has become necessary because it would help in the fight against the disease and make the people healthy and thus contribute meaningfully towards the socio-economic development of the country.
He announced that the new paradigm of NADMO is to emphasise on the prevention and management aspect of disasters by creating the awareness about the dangers of disasters and the need to minimise them. Mr Amoo stressed the need for stakeholders including churches, students, assembly members, traditional rulers, the media and others to be partners in achieving the objective of the organisation. He regretted that about 80 per cent of the disasters were man-made, which results in the loss of lives and property thereby affecting the economy.
He appealed to the people to ensure proper hygiene and environmental sanitation in their areas to avoid the outbreak of diseases.
He urged the Amansie West District Assembly and the Ghana Highway Authority to erect road signs on the Anwiankwanta-Manso-Nkwanta road to help reduce accidents.
Mr Joseph Adomako, District Director of Health Services, disclosed that the district directorate of health services last year recorded 113 cases of Buruli Ulcer of which two-thirds were from outside the district.
He said the treatment of the disease is very high and appealed to the National Health Insurance Council to include the disease in the National Health Insurance Scheme.
Mr Amoo who was accompanied by Mr Kofi Osei Amponsah, Ashanti Regional Co-ordinator of NADMO, also toured Amansie East, Bosomtwe-Atwima-Kwanwoma, Ejisu-Juaben and Atwima-Nwabiagya districts.
