Kwabena Mintah Akandoh is the Minister of Health
The Ministry of Health has appealed to retired nurses and midwives across the country to volunteer their services, as the ongoing strike by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwifery Association (GRNMA) continues to bite hard.
Speaking at a press briefing on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh noted that this measure will help mitigate the negative impact of the strike on patients seeking healthcare.
He stated that the volunteer program will serve as a temporary solution while the ministry and other stakeholders engage with the affected associations to resolve the matter.
“Given the urgency of the situation and the suffering of patients, the government is appealing to retired nurses and midwives to volunteer their services for a brief period, pending the resolution of the impasse,” he said.
Akandoh also stated that the ministry has taken additional steps and will publish a list of health facilities where nursing services are fully operational to assist patients seeking healthcare to temporarily bridge any gaps created as a result of the strike.
“The Ministry will in the next few hours publish a comprehensive list of facilities to support affected centres where nursing services are lacking; so that patients can seek healthcare there,” he added.
The MP for Juaboso, speaking on the negotiations between the government and the association, reiterated the government's commitment to resolving the issue so that full services at hospitals can be restored.
The GRNMA embarked on a nationwide strike on June 4, 2025, due to the government's failure to implement key provisions of their 2024 Collective Agreement, which includes allowances, incentives, and improved working conditions.
