GHS sounds alarm as Mpox cases near 1,000

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has confirmed 13 new Mpox cases, bringing the country’s total to 993 as of January 25, 2026.

This update was shared on the GHS’s X page on Tuesday, February 3, 2026.

"Mpox update as of January 25, 2026. 13 new cases recorded, bringing the total confirmed cases to 993," the post read.

The GHS reiterated that Mpox spreads primarily through close contact with infected individuals.

"Mpox spreads mainly through close contact with someone who has the infection," the service stated.

It also warned that Mpox can be transmitted through contaminated materials, contact with infected animals, and in the case of an infected pregnant mother, from mother to foetus, or to the newborn during or after birth.

GHS urged the public to maintain good personal hygiene and seek immediate medical attention at the nearest health facility if any symptoms associated with Mpox appear.

"Protect yourself and others by maintaining good hygiene and reporting any symptoms such as fever, rash, headache, muscle aches, swollen lymph nodes, chills, and tiredness," the GHS advised.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Mpox, also known as monkeypox, is a viral illness caused by the monkeypox virus.

The disease spreads mainly from person to person through close contact, including within households, and early detection is key to preventing further transmission.
