Ghana steps up gender equality with launch of secretariat

The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection has convened the First Quarter Meeting of its Gender Equity Committee for 2026, reaffirming its commitment to advancing gender equality and promoting the effective implementation of affirmative action policies in Ghana.

The committee plays a central role in guiding policy direction, promoting gender mainstreaming across sectors and ensuring compliance with national frameworks on gender equality.

The meeting focused on critical agenda items, including the finalization and adoption of Terms of Reference for its sub-committees, an important step aimed at clarifying roles, enhancing coordination, and improving operational efficiency. Members also considered institution-specific gender policies, providing an opportunity to assess their alignment with national priorities and share best practices to deepen gender responsiveness across institutions.

A major highlight of the meeting was the commissioning and operationalization of the 'Gender Equity Committee Secretariat'.

Established in line with objectives of the Affirmative Action Framework, the Secretariat is expected to provide administrative and technical support to the Committee, strengthen coordination of activities, improve documentation & reporting systems, facilitate effective reporting systems, and facilitate effective monitoring of gender-related policies & programmes.

Delivering her remarks, the minister, Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, expressed appreciation to members for their continued dedication to the Committee's work.

She emphasized that their contributions remain vital in shaping policies, strengthening institutional frameworks, and ensuring measurable impact.

The minister also encouraged members to engage actively and constructively in discussions, stressing the need for a results-oriented approach that translates policy commitments into tangible improvements in the lives of citizens.

The meeting forms part of the ministry's ongoing efforts to strengthen institutional frameworks and accelerate progress towards achieving gender equity and inclusive national development.
