The Ministry of Health Ghana has confirmed its readiness to commence the nationwide rollout of the government’s Free Primary Healthcare programme, a major policy aimed at expanding access to essential health services and promoting preventive care.

Speaking on Channel One Newsroom on Saturday, April 11, 2026, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Health, Tony Goodman said all key preparatory processes for the implementation of the initiative have been completed.

He explained that the Ministry has established the necessary systems and structures to ensure the programme is delivered effectively across the country.

“What it takes to implement such a policy, what we have to do as a ministry has been done,” he indicated.

As part of the rollout strategy, the government is investing in health infrastructure to support service delivery at the community level.

According to Goodman, about 30 health centres are currently under construction in various parts of the country, including high-traffic areas such as Madina Market.

“These facilities will play a critical role in the implementation of the programme by bringing healthcare closer to the people,” he noted.

The Ministry has also been engaging key stakeholders within the health sector to fine-tune the rollout process and address potential concerns.

Goodman disclosed that a recent stakeholder meeting was held in Dodowa, with more consultations expected.

The Free Primary Healthcare programme is designed to prioritise preventive and promotive healthcare, with the aim of reducing pressure on major hospitals and improving early diagnosis and management of diseases.

“It is about ensuring that people seek care early, rather than waiting until conditions become severe. This will help decongest hospitals and improve overall health outcomes,” he added.

On who qualifies, Goodman said the programme will be open to all Ghanaians living in the country.

Meanwhile, the Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has reiterated government’s commitment to launching the programme before the end of April 2026.

The policy is expected to play a central role in strengthening Ghana’s healthcare system and advancing efforts toward universal health coverage.
