Medical practitioner, Dr Mefia-Denteh, has shared quick and convenient strategies individuals can practice for stress management.

She indicated that deep breathing, short walks, and some simple daily habits can go a long way to reduce stress.

Speaking on Health Focus on GhanaWeb TV, Dr Paulina Mefia-Denteh shared practical techniques people can use to calm themselves during stressful moments.

“You calm yourself down… you take in a deep breath for four seconds, hold it, then release it slowly,” she said.

She explained that this breathing technique helps reduce the effects of stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol, allowing the body to return to a calmer state.

Beyond breathing, she highlighted the importance of physical activity, noting that exercise does not have to be intense.

“You can just take even a short walk to clear your mind,” she said.

For many people who feel too busy or unmotivated to exercise, she encouraged starting small, saying even routine movements can make a difference.

The conversation also touched on the role of diet in managing stress.

According to her, excessive intake of caffeine and sugary foods can worsen anxiety and lead to energy crashes.

“Caffeine leads to anxiety… high sugar levels lead to energy crashes,” she explained.

Instead, she recommended a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables to support overall well-being.

She also addressed common misconceptions about stress relief, dismissing unverified claims and encouraging people to rely on proven, healthy methods.

Importantly, she urged individuals experiencing severe stress or depression to seek help.

“Stress shouldn’t lead to depression and depression shouldn’t lead to ending your life,” she said.

She pointed to available mental health support systems in Ghana, encouraging people to speak up and reach out when overwhelmed.
