Missing Salaga Newborn: Report suspicious mother-baby pairs - GHS to hospitals

The Savannah Regional Health Directorate (SRHD) of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) has ordered all health facilities across the country to remain on heightened alert for any suspicious mother-baby pair, as investigations intensify into the disappearance of a newborn from the East Gonja Municipal Hospital in Salaga.

The directive contained in a statement issued on June 24, 2026, forms part of renewed nationwide efforts to locate the missing baby.

“We are requesting all hospitals, child welfare clinics, and Community Health Officers to remain on the alert for any mother-baby pair whose circumstances appear suspicious. Such cases should be reported immediately to the appropriate security authorities,” it stated.

The SRHD further indicated that it is working closely with the Ghana Police Service to locate the baby.

It is appealing to the public to provide any information that could help trace the whereabouts of the newborn.

“Members of the public who may have any information are kindly requested to come forward and share it with the nearest police station, the SRHD, or the East Gonja Municipal Hospital,” the statement said.

It added that all information will be treated with strict confidentiality.

Meanwhile, the staff responsible for the baby’s care prior to the disappearance have been arraigned before the Tamale High Court, where they are currently facing criminal proceedings.

They have also been interdicted from duty in line with the GHS Code of Conduct and Disciplinary Procedures, pending the outcome of the case.

The Health Director has further constituted a seven-member investigation committee to probe the circumstances leading to the incident.

The committee is expected to recommend disciplinary measures where necessary and propose reforms aimed at preventing similar occurrences in the future.

Meanwhile, psychological support has been arranged for the baby’s parents as they continue to cope with the emotional distress caused by the incident.

The GHS reiterated its commitment to patient safety and accountability across all facilities.
