Newmont expands healthcare support with equipment donation to Legon Hospital

Newmont has donated essential medical equipment valued at more than GH¢290,000 to the University of Ghana Health Services at Legon, reinforcing its commitment to safety and strengthening healthcare delivery in Ghana.

The donation followed a request from the facility's Internal Medicine Department, which provides care for a large number of patients, including emergency and critically ill cases. The department had been facing challenges due to inadequate medical equipment, affecting workflow efficiency and patient outcomes.

Originally established to serve University of Ghana staff and their dependants, the University of Ghana Health Services has evolved into a district-level hospital. It now provides healthcare services to surrounding communities within Legon and beyond, receiving referrals from facilities as far as Mampong Hospital in the Eastern Region.

The growing demand has heightened the need for additional equipment to support quality healthcare delivery.

To help improve patient care, Newmont donated a range of essential medical equipment, including patient monitors, hospital beds with mattresses, infusion pumps, an ECG machine, suction machines, ward screens, drip stands, and bedside cabinets. The equipment is expected to enhance patient monitoring, treatment, and comfort while supporting healthcare professionals to deliver quality care.

Receiving the items on behalf of the facility, the Chair of the Hospital Management Committee, Professor Gordon Abeka Nkrumah, described the donation as timely and impactful.

"This support came at a very critical time for us. This facility cares for a high volume of patients each month, many of them in urgent and critical conditions. Having access to the right equipment will significantly improve how we monitor, treat and care for our patients. It will also ease the pressure on our staff and help us deliver safer, more effective care. We are truly grateful to Newmont for responding to our need in such a meaningful way," he said.

Presenting the equipment, Newmont's Director of External Relations and Communications, David Johnson, reaffirmed the company's commitment to health, safety, and community wellbeing.

"We recognize that one of the key challenges in healthcare delivery is the availability of critical medical equipment. Even the most skilled professionals cannot function effectively without the tools they need. For us at Newmont, responding to this need is how we make a meaningful difference," he said.

The donation builds on Newmont's recent support for Ghana's healthcare sector, including the provision of essential medical equipment to Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital and financial assistance to the Ayawaso North Municipal Health Directorate and the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research to support health awareness campaigns.

According to the company, the latest donation reflects its broader commitment to improving healthcare delivery and contributing to sustainable development in Ghana through investments that strengthen health systems and build resilient communities.
