Weija Children’s Hospital set to open following Health Ministry-Awerco agreement

The Weija Children’s Hospital is set to open its doors to the public after the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) successfully brokered an agreement between the Ministry of Health and Awerco Construction Limited for the immediate handover of the facility.

In a press statement issued on Thursday, July 16, 2026, EOCO announced that both parties had agreed to transfer the completed hospital to the Ministry of Health, paving the way for healthcare services to begin without further delay.

According to the anti-graft agency, the agreement was reached after a series of engagements despite unresolved issues surrounding the project.

These include claims by Awerco Construction over unpaid sums and concerns raised by the project’s financier regarding procurement processes and other related matters.

EOCO explained that the decision to proceed with the handover was taken in the national interest to ensure the completed hospital begins serving its intended purpose while the outstanding disputes are addressed separately.

The Office said the agreement will enable the commissioning and operationalisation of the hospital, allowing children and families to access much-needed specialised healthcare services.

However, EOCO stressed that its investigations into alleged procurement breaches, financial impropriety and other irregularities linked to the project remain ongoing.

It noted that the handover of the hospital does not affect or prejudice the outcome of those investigations.
