The Ghana Medical Trust Fund (GMTF), popularly known as Mahama Cares, has so far registered seven patients with various cancer-related conditions in the Volta Region for support under the programme.
The Volta Regional Coordinator of the GMTF, Emefa Daitey, disclosed this during a presentation at the 3rd Volta Regional Coordinating Council meeting held at the Residence Conference Room on Thursday, August 20, 2026.
According to Daitey, some of the beneficiaries are receiving treatment at the Ho Teaching Hospital, while others have been referred to specialised health facilities in Accra and Kumasi because certain services are not available in the region.
She explained that one child had been referred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), while another was receiving treatment at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
Another child diagnosed with soft tissue sarcoma had also been referred to Korle Bu for specialised care.
Daitey added that beneficiaries diagnosed with breast and cervical cancers were currently receiving treatment at the Ho Teaching Hospital.
She said the referrals formed part of efforts by Mahama Care to ensure that eligible beneficiaries received the appropriate specialised treatment, irrespective of where the required medical service was available.
The Ghana Medical Trust Fund is a government-supported health intervention that provides financial assistance to eligible beneficiaries requiring treatment for selected serious medical conditions.
The Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, commended the Mahama Cares programme for supporting residents battling non-communicable diseases.
Speaking to the media, Gunu said the programme was providing critical support to families who might otherwise struggle to afford the cost of medical treatment.
He said reports presented to the Regional Coordinating Council indicated that beneficiaries were receiving the necessary assistance, thereby reducing the financial burden of treatment on patients and their families.
Gunu also called on residents to maintain peace and unity, stressing that stability remained essential to attracting investment, promoting economic growth and accelerating development in the Volta Region.
