Mercy Ships set to perform over 2,000 free surgeries in Ghana

Senior Presidential Advisor to President John Dramani Mahama, Joyce Bawah Mogtari, has announced that Mercy Ships will provide more than 2,000 free surgeries to patients in Ghana.

In a post shared on X on August 24, 2026, Mogtari said the medical charity would deploy its hospital ship to Ghana to provide specialised surgical services across various medical fields.

She said the ship, which will be docked at the Port of Tema, will receive patients from across the country who require the free procedures.

“Mercy Ships will operate its hospital ship to provide over 2,000 free surgeries across various specialities,” she indicated.

According to Mogtari, the ship will be staffed by qualified medical volunteers who will provide the surgical services during their time with Mercy Ships.

Unpacking the agreement between Ghana and Mercy Ships

She added that the initiative would go beyond the provision of surgeries, as Mercy Ships would collaborate with the Government of Ghana, particularly the Ministry of Health, to provide medical services, as well as training and mentoring opportunities.

“This partnership aims to create a lasting impact beyond the surgeries,” she said.

Mogtari expressed appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama for spearheading the initiative, while also commending the Ministers of Finance, Health and Foreign Affairs for their contributions.

“Today we thank our President, HE John Dramani Mahama, for spearheading this initiative and to the Finance, Health and Foreign Ministers we say Ayekoo!” she added.
