Work begins on new 400-bed Mother and Child Block at Korle Bu

Land preparation has begun for the construction of a new 400-bed Mother and Child Block at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

The modern facility is expected to replace the hospital’s old maternity unit and improve healthcare services for pregnant women, mothers and newborn babies.

The project forms part of the John Dramani Mahama government’s plan to improve major health facilities and provide better conditions for patients and health workers.

In a post shared via X on September 21, 2026, Spokesperson to the President Felix Kwakye Ofosu said the new block would have obstetrics and gynaecology wards, labour and delivery rooms, operating theatres, and specialised units for mothers and newborns requiring critical care.

It will also have a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), High Dependency Unit (HDU) and Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Other facilities will include an IVF and assisted reproduction centre, antenatal and postnatal clinics, fertility and reproductive health clinics, breastfeeding and family planning units, and an emergency obstetric care unit.

The block will also provide diagnostic imaging services, laboratories, a blood bank, pharmacy, physiotherapy and rehabilitation services.

Teaching, research and conference facilities will also be included to support the training of health professionals and medical research.

The project is expected to strengthen Korle Bu’s capacity to handle complicated pregnancies, childbirth emergencies and serious health conditions affecting mothers and newborns.

Korle Bu is Ghana’s largest teaching hospital and receives patients referred from health facilities across the country.

The new facility is expected to provide additional space and modern equipment for maternal and child healthcare while replacing the ageing maternity infrastructure currently in use at the hospital.
